NOVEMBER 2015

MENTOR MONDAYS

During the month of November, amongst other topics, we continued our discussion about professionalism by conducting mock interviews. Nana 12th grade, enjoyed the activity, exclaiming “it gave me a sense of what I’m struggling with and what I can further improve on to make my interview with any employer or admissions officer go smoothly...I got a lot of advice from the mentor I was working with.”

To wrap up the semester we hosted our annual Ugly Sweater Party, where the mentees and mentors dressed in ugly Christmas sweaters and enjoyed each others company for the last time before mentors begin to prepare for finals.

COLLEGE BOUND

During one of our workshops, we hosted a Financing College Panel where financial aid advisors from Bowie State University and University of Maryland served as guest speakers. This panel was extremely informative—providing invaluable insight for our mentees.

During our College: Keys to Success workshop, students learned about what it takes to be a successful college student. Zinab, 12th grade, explained she now understands that “it’s good to have a four year plan so that you are aware of what you want to do in college...another important tip that I learned is that I should learn how to get organized.”

COMMUNITY SERVICE

This month we volunteered with Teens & Jeans for the Homeless where we helped fold over 6,000 jeans for homeless men, women, and children. Mentor Tahja said, “It was a very great event...I loved that we got a chance to give back to the community and help the homeless have clothes on their back.”

BIGS x LITTLES

Our mentors and mentees had a great time during their November one-on-one activities—strengthening their bond as sisters and friends…here are a few highlights!

Samantha and Sonovia went to the movies and saw the new James Bond film, Spectre.

India and mentees, Kylen and Estefania, decided to go take a trip to Chinatown where they chatted at Starbucks and dined at Tony Cheng's Seafood and Chinese restaurant.

Porchia and her mentees, Hersona and Cyenna, attended Roosevelt’s Heels On Ice event.

Kyeana and Morgan took their mentees, Brittany, Lexi, and Jasmine,

out to dinner and thrifting!
